A CIBIL score below 700 can cost you lakhs in higher home-loan rates. The good news: with disciplined effort, you can typically push a 650-score into the 750+ band within 6–8 months. Here's the playbook, in priority order.
1. Pull your free report first
Get your free annual credit report at cibil.com. Look for: late payments, accounts you don't recognize, wrong balances, settled-vs-closed mismatches.
2. Dispute errors aggressively
30% of CIBIL reports have at least one error. File disputes online — CIBIL is required to investigate within 30 days. A single removed late-payment can lift the score by 30–50 points.
3. Pay every EMI / card bill on time
The single biggest factor (35% weight). One 30-day-late payment can drop the score by 80 points. Set up auto-pay for every credit-card and loan EMI immediately.
4. Crush utilization below 30%
If your credit-card limit is ₹2 lakh and your statement balance is ₹1 lakh, utilization is 50% — bad. Two fixes:
- Pay before the statement date (not just due date). Lower reported balance = lower utilization.
- Request a limit increase. Most banks raise limits free for clients with 12-month clean history.
5. Don't close old credit cards
Closing a 10-year-old card resets your "average account age" — and lowers your score. If a card has no annual fee, keep it open with a small recurring expense (Netflix subscription on it).
6. Mix credit types thoughtfully
The "credit mix" factor (10% weight) rewards having both secured credit (home loan, car loan) and unsecured (credit card, personal loan). Don't take debt for the sake of it, but if you're 30 with only a credit card, a small home-loan top-up may be appropriate.
7. Limit new applications
Every "hard inquiry" (when a lender pulls your CIBIL) drops the score by 3–5 points. Avoid applying for 3+ credits in a 6-month window. If shopping for the same loan from multiple banks, do it within 14 days — CIBIL clubs them as one inquiry.
How long does improvement take?
- Utilization fix: visible in 1–2 statement cycles (30–60 days)
- Late-payment recovery: 6–12 months of clean history
- Major dispute correction: 1 cycle after CIBIL confirms
